What Is AMH and What Does It Measure?
Anti-Mullerian Hormone is produced by the granulosa cells surrounding small follicles in the ovaries. More follicles = more AMH = higher blood level.
Anti-Mullerian Hormone (AMH) is a protein produced directly by the granulosa cells that surround the small, developing follicles in the ovaries. Each follicle contains one egg. The more follicles a woman has, the more AMH her ovaries produce — and the higher her blood AMH level.
Unlike FSH — which fluctuates significantly throughout the menstrual cycle — AMH remains relatively stable, making it convenient to test on any day without careful cycle timing. This is one of the key reasons AMH has become the preferred ovarian reserve marker in clinical practice.
AMH Normal Range — Understanding Your Results
AMH values are reported in ng/mL in most Indian laboratories. The interpretation depends on your age — always read your result in that context.
| AMH Level | ng/mL Range | Interpretation | What It Means for You |
|---|---|---|---|
| ⬆ Very High | > 4.0 ng/mL | Elevated / PCOS Risk | Possible PCOS; high follicle count but ovulation may be irregular — assess with full hormonal panel. See our PCOS blood tests guide. |
| ✓ Optimal | 1.5 – 4.0 ng/mL | Good Ovarian Reserve | Good response expected to fertility treatment; natural conception likely within normal timeframes |
| ~ Low Normal | 1.0 – 1.5 ng/mL | Low-Normal Reserve | Fertility intact but declining; monitor with fertility & prenatal panel |
| ↓ Low | 0.5 – 1.0 ng/mL | Diminished Reserve | Reduced egg count; time-sensitive; fertility specialist consultation strongly recommended |
| ⬇ Very Low | < 0.5 ng/mL | Severely Diminished | Very limited egg reserve; immediate specialist referral |
AMH Levels by Age — What Is Normal at Your Age?
AMH naturally declines with age. The clinical question is whether your level is appropriate for where you are in your reproductive timeline.
| Age Group | Average AMH | Clinical Significance | Recommended Action |
|---|---|---|---|
| 25–30 years | 2.5 – 4.0 ng/mL | Peak reproductive years | Test if planning delayed pregnancy or IVF; excellent baseline for future comparison |
| 30–35 years | 1.5 – 3.0 ng/mL | Gradual decline begins | Baseline test recommended; family planning timeline review with doctor |
| 35–38 years | 1.0 – 2.0 ng/mL | Accelerating decline | Urgent family planning review; fertility consultation strongly advised |
| 38–40 years | 0.5 – 1.5 ng/mL | Significant decline | Immediate fertility specialist review; IVF assessment and planning |
| Over 40 years | < 0.5 – 1.0 ng/mL | Severely diminished in most | Donor egg options discussion; specialist referral without delay |
What the AMH Test Cannot Tell You
The AMH test is powerful — but it has important limitations every woman should understand before testing.
🚫 Not Egg Quality
AMH measures egg quantity only. A low AMH with good egg quality (common in younger women) can still result in a healthy pregnancy. Quality and quantity are separate dimensions of fertility.
🚫 Not a Conception Guarantee
AMH does not predict natural conception. Women with very low AMH do conceive naturally. It is a statistical guide — not a definitive fertility verdict for any individual.
🚫 Not a Complete Fertility Test
AMH does not assess uterine health, tubal patency, partner fertility or other causes of infertility. A complete evaluation requires much more than AMH alone.
🚫 Not a Final Answer
AMH should always be interpreted alongside FSH, LH, antral follicle count on ultrasound, clinical history and age. A single number never tells the whole story.
Who Should Get an AMH Test?
Five groups of women benefit most from AMH testing — at different stages of their reproductive journey.
Women Planning to Delay Pregnancy
If you are in your late twenties or early thirties and not yet ready for a family but know you want children, an AMH test gives you a concrete data point about your reproductive timeline.
Women With PCOS
Women with polycystic ovary syndrome typically have AMH levels two to four times above the age-expected range.
Women Considering IVF or Fertility Treatment
AMH is the primary predictor of ovarian response to stimulation in IVF.
Women With Irregular Periods or Suspected POI
Women who experience irregular periods, early menopausal symptoms, or have a family history of premature menopause should test AMH early.
Women After Chemotherapy, Radiation or Ovarian Surgery
Cancer treatment and ovarian surgery can significantly reduce ovarian reserve. AMH testing after treatment establishes the current reserve.
Egg freezing (oocyte cryopreservation) has become an increasingly accessible option for Indian women who wish to preserve their fertility. AMH is the primary test that determines whether the current reserve is sufficient and how urgently you should act.
Whether your current reserve is sufficient to retrieve a meaningful number of eggs per cycle
How urgently you should consider freezing — if AMH is declining rapidly, delay is costly
The likely number of eggs that can be retrieved per IVF stimulation cycle
Whether multiple stimulation cycles will be needed to freeze an adequate number of eggs
WINDOW
The Optimal Egg Freezing Window
Between ages 28 and 35, AMH is typically highest and egg quality is still strong — giving you the broadest options.
How to Prepare for Your AMH Blood Test
The AMH test is one of the most convenient fertility tests available — minimal preparation required.
No fasting required — AMH can be tested at any time of day without dietary restrictions.
No cycle timing needed — AMH is stable throughout the menstrual cycle. Test on any convenient day.
Oral contraceptives are acceptable — the pill mildly suppresses AMH but the clinical interpretation remains valid.
Home collection is available — a phlebotomist visits your home at a convenient time. Book home collection in Surat.
Nobel Micropath Laboratory is NABL-accredited and uses a validated automated immunoassay platform for AMH testing, with age-referenced result reporting. Our team can provide specialist consultation referral for women with borderline or concerning AMH results.
